Pittsburgh Martial Arts & Boxing Academy offers several class options to fit your wants and needs. The best part is you can take any / all classes for no extra fees. When you become a gym member, you can come to everything on the schedule. You can literally be here six days a week!CLASSES OFFERED AMERICAN FREESTYLE MARTIAL ARTS
FOUNDATION - When you first join, you will focus on building a strong foundation consisting of basic stance and footwork and 15 basic techniques. Once you have this foundation, you will be allowed to spar (if you want). BOXING - Olympic-style / Western Boxing is offered for all skill levels. Participants will learn stance, footwork, punches, blocks, evasions, head movement, combinations, strategies, rules and the safe use of all equipment. Classes all start with a warm-up of jumping rope (it's ok if you can't jump rope right away, we'll teach you) and shadowboxing. Classes then progress to drills and/or equipment training, depending on the days lesson plan. For drills, participants are grouped according to skill level to ensure that you are working on what YOU need to work on. Every class ends with a conditioning set that varies per class.
KICKBOXING - Our blended kickboxing program builds on the foundation of Western Boxing and draws from muay Thai, American Kickboxing / Karate and San Da / Sanshou. Similar in format to our boxing classes, participants will learn stance, footwork, punches, kicks, knees, blocks, evasions, head movement, Thai and Western clinching, combinations, strategies, rules and the safe use of all equipment. Classes will also start with a warm-up of jumping rope (it's ok if you can't jump rope right away, we'll teach you) and shadowboxing. Kickboxing classes will then progress to drills and/or equipment training, depending on the days lesson plan. For drills, participants are grouped according to skill level to ensure that you are working on what YOU need to work on. Every class ends with a conditioning set that varies per class.
AMERICAN FREESTYLE MARTIAL ARTS - This is our mixed martial arts approach to realistic self-defense that we have offered for over 30 years. Designed to evolve and be updated with the times, this system has been tested and proven to work in the streets of our society TODAY. While it builds on a boxing / kickboxing foundation for the footwork and basic strikes, it is not a sport. If there are any rules, it can not truly be called a street-oriented / reality-based martial art. In this class you will learn hand-to-hand combat, hand-to-weapon combat and weapon-to-weapon combat in all ranges, including ground fighting and use of / defense against weapons. The weapons taught are impact, edged, and projectile (firearms). We do not teach traditional martial arts weapons. This class starts with the boxing / kickboxing foundation and draws from kali, police defensive tactics, wrestling, jiu jitsu and jeet kune do. We use the term American Freestyle Martial Arts to describe our blended system and "free-of-style" approach. There are many schools that use the term American Freestyle or some variation of it, we are not affiliated with them. Rank is available in this program for those willing to make a commitment to training. On average, a Black Belt can be earned in 5 years of continuous training. Sparring with all types of combat in all ranges is required for rank.
OPEN FIGHT CONDITIONING - The same type of conditioning our fighters are put through but this class is open to everyone.
